X-cape Outdoors Story

James Vance

Dr. James Vance is a new generation hunter.  Born in Bluefield, WV, but mostly raised in northern Virginia, he did not have the privilege of a hunting heritage. Growing up the son of a minister, James has moved several times in his life. At age 15 he was moved to southwest Virginia where he went on his first hunt ever.  Doe fever got the best of him and he left the woods without meat, but with the burning desire to complete the experience. He killed his first deer (a three point buck) three years later with a single shot H&R .30-30.  He has been hooked on hunting ever since. Throughout high school and college, James continued to spend as much time in the woods as possible.  Most of his hunting was done alone since none of his family hunted at the time. His first hunting partner was his girlfriend (now wife) Aranda.  Aranda is James’ videographer. After 10 years of college he graduated with his Ph.D. in mathematics from Virginia Tech in 2006.  He is currently a professor at a small college in southwest Virginia where he teaches math and conducts mathematical biology research. Twelve years after taking his first deer, the antlers of that three-pointer are still on his wall and the .30-30 now has a position of honor in his office.  Due to his passion, James has hunted in multiple states and has become an avid bow hunter. He considers himself a new generation hunter because, instead of learning from Jack O’Connor, Fred Bear, and their contemporaries, he is learning from Gary Bogner, Jim Shockey, Mark Drury, and Terry Drury. His hunting knowledge was gained through trial and error as well as reading multiplied dozens of magazines and books and watching hundreds of hunting videos. His long-term hunting goal is to take all 28 North American big game species (the North American Super Slam) with a bow on camera.

Garry Fuller

gfuller150Born in the state of Michigan in 1965, Garry's Father introduced him to the  thrill and beauty of the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Garry's family moved to a small Appalachian Virginia town in the summer of 1973. The abundance of fish and game only spurred greater interest in living the dream life.

Great hunters like Fred Bear and Jack O'Connor fueled Garry's passion through the books and magazines he read. Never idle, Garry fashioned a bow from a wild cherry tree at the age of twelve. His first arrows were cattails with turkey feathers. Big game for this young man consisted mostly of rabbit and groundhog. Garry's father rewarded his son's zeal with a Fred Bear bow and arrow kit for his 14th birthday.

Since those formative years, Garry has taken many species with a bow: whitetail deer, black bear, turkey, water buffalo, seven species of sheep and all kinds of exotics.

His passion has always been whitetail deer, Garry has ten bucks to his credit that would score over Pope and Young minimum, all taken in the wild under fair chase conditions. His passion is to kill all the deer species of North America and capture them all on film to share with others his love for bow hunting.

A self-taught videographer, Garry has witnessed some great wildlife interactions during his time afield. Appearing on ESPN and featured in different magazine articles, his passion to get others involved in hunting is one of his strongholds. Working with kids and answering their questions about hunting is very rewarding. Helping one person achieve his goals in hunting is worth everything. Teaching children to hunt helps them in the trials of life. Thanks to all the fathers and mothers who take time to teach their children or the children of others the dream life.

Thanks to my wife, Christine Fuller for supporting me throughout my career.
